Today we achieved something great for racial justice in North Carolina. This morning, Governor Bev Perdue vetoed NC Senate Bill 9 (SB9), a bill which would have gutted the Racial Justice Act.
The Racial Justice Act (RJA) allows death row inmates to appeal their case based on statistics showing that racial discrimination was involved in their conviction. In a sneaky move shortly after Thanksgiving, NC Legislators held a special session in which they voted on and passed SB9, effectively repealing the RJA.
But - thanks to the actions of many of you - Governor Perdue stood firm! She vetoed SB9, which, according to Public Policy Polling, only 23% of NC supported, striking a victory against injustice here in North Carolina.
So, please, take a moment and pledge to thank Governor Perdue for her actions today.
And thank you again, everyone, for your support in the efforts to oppose this heinous repeal.
